Scholarship

Each year the Sparta Society awards merit scholarships to worthy college students continuing their education at the university level. Scholarships are presented at the annual dinner dance each November. All applications are to be sent to spartasociety@gmail.com where they will be made anonymous for the viewing for the scholarship committee.​

Evanthia Arianas, MSN, BSN

Committee Head

 

Evanthia has a strong passion for helping others. As a registered nurse, she has been able to combine this passion with her desire to make a difference.

 

Evanthia has worked within critical care, inpatient, and outpatient care settings working amongst the most critically ill patients. She completed her education at the University of Illinois at Chicago where she earned her Master of Science in Nursing.

 

Aside from her career, Evanthia loves helping those outside of the world of healthcare. She is passionate about helping students excel in their college careers and at professional levels. Throughout the years, she has participated in many scholarship committees and organizations within the Greek community. Growing up, Evanthia was significantly influenced by all the various programs she partook in. Because of the profound effect these programs had on her as a child, she wants to give the current generation the same experiences she had. She believes it is important to support the youth of our community and help them prosper as they are the future of our community.

 

In her free time, Evanthia enjoys spending time with family and friends and being outdoors.

Anthony Xidis, PhD

​

Dr. Xidis is a teacher at the secondary and tertiary level. He has been teaching for over 30 years in the Chicago public schools and Chicago city colleges and Universities. In addition, he has founded a school in which adults can study and learn Modern Greek in the Chicago metropolitan area. He is very proud and excited about this program because it provides people the opportunity to learn our beautiful and unique language.

 

Dr. Xidis completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University, and Florida State University from which he earned his Philosophy Doctorate in Multilingual/Bilingual Education. During his career, he has participated in many scholarship committees of different organizations and founded scholarship endowments for college students.

 

Dr Xidis believes strongly in helping and supporting university students in any way possible to achieve their academic goals and aspirations. He also believes that educated professionals should lead by example and should give back to the community abundantly in order to inspire and support our youth and. Lastly, he believes in hard work that results in successful accomplishments.

Fotini Kontakos​

​Fotini Kontakos studied Information Systems at Elmhurst University. She currently works as a Technology Support Analyst. She enjoys being active in the Greek community and is passionate about keeping the Greek culture alive with youth. In her free time, Fotini likes to take pictures, explore the city, and run a food review page. She also enjoys giving back to the community by participating in a variety of service events. By being part of the scholarship committee, she hopes to encourage Greek-American students to continue into higher education and give back to their community.
